Controlling shift registers using raw usb signal

Hello, I am a complete beginner in electronics so I apologize about any stupid question..

Is there a way to controll shift register by directly using USB signal? Like physically linking the USB pins (http://img4-1.realsimple.timeinc.net/images/0809/USB-port_300.jpg) to the pins of Shift register. I want to make my android phone to serve as a USB host to control shift registers and control LED lights. . .

Please let me know..

Thank you!!!! !!!

Have a look at the IOIO. I'm just getting into Android but this looks like something that might work. https://github.com/ytai/ioio/wiki
