For a few weeks, the web comic xkcd was running a color name survey.
Basically, a square of a certain color was displayed on your monitor, and
you were asked to type in a name describing that color. The results are
now available at http://blag.xkcd.com/2010/05/03/color-survey-results/ .
(There is also a link to the survey so you can see how it worked.)
Of course this is not a "scientific" sampling; it's easy to know how
many sessions there were, but not how many unique users. It also is
obviously biased towards people who have or have access to a PC (or
smartphone or similar). Further limitations are discussed in the
results page above.
It's not *directly* about lighting, but I figure it is in the same
direction, and the results might be interesting to those here.
