charge before use

Many electronic products (such as phones) will say to charge the device for
12 or so hours before using it.

Why is this necessary, and what will happen to the batteries if you don't do
this?

Why is this necessary,

** It helps avoid silly complaints to sellers about short run time.

Most folk have no idea that rechargeable cells * self discharge * while in
storage - so expect their new phone to come with a fully charged
batteries.

Is there something about NiMH batteries that mean you have to do this?

Self discharge, like Phil said. After a month or two in storage the
btteies will be flat. Some premium batteries (eg: "Eneloop") have
reduced self discharge.

Li-po and Li-ion batteries have self disharge too but at a much lower rate.

Lead-acid batteries do too.
