carver m400 amp

graeme

i have owned this amp since 1982 and it has been trouble free until
now, i have been quoted $330.00 AUD to repair the amp after it went
bang and stopped, is it worth fixing or should i go for something more
modern, maybe keep the amp until i find a donor on ebay.
thanks.

Get some more quotes from qualified service people.
Ask for a detailed description of the fault.

For proper repairs, the Carver rep or someone who really knows them
should be servicing your amp. These are fairly complex. You should
contact Carver directly to be properly informed about who to send the
amp to. If you went to an independent service shop, they probably will
have the repair jobbered out for them. I believe Carver will not sell
parts or service manuals to non authorized service reps for their
products. You can ask them directly, if they still have this policy.

You should find out the replacement cost of the unit before giving it
for service. This way you can decide if it is worth servicing or not.
Carver audio equipment is of high quality, and is expensive to replace.

I'd agree with that - if you have been quoted by someone who thinks it's
just another power amp, they may have a nasty surprise when they atttempt
the repair. They have unconventional power supplies and topologies, and
some parts are only available from Carver. They require careful setting up
too. Good amps though.

Anyone willing to fix a cube for only $330AU is a very brave servicer. Those are the most
poorly designed, inefficient & FLAMMABLE amps of all time. Scary as hell. Even more flammable
than Bob's infamous Phase Linear crap. Might be almost forgivable if the piece of incendiary
crap actually sounded good, but it doesn't. What is REALLY scary is that the Sunfire amps are
a direct evolution of the cube. Scary as hell AND expensive.
Personally, I turn down every client that asks me to fix a cube. No way I want to warranty one
of those abominations.

They'll sell to non-authorized shops. Bought Carver parts from Sunfire as
recently as a couple months back.
