Browsing Sam's Club

Was dragged to Sam's club by the wife. I kept getting lost from her, because
I was inexorably drawn to the 4 pound turtle cheesecakes and the batteries
and generators.

I found a really sweet looking Lincoln 8 hp 100% duty cycle @ 4000 W
generator/ 125 A welder, or "genwelder". Nice B&S Intek OHV engine. The
package is a little expensive at 1K, but I trust Santa will bring it to me
if I'm good.

Sam's has the big 12 V trolling motor batteries for $49, and the golf cart
batteries for $48, both a steal. I ran across a HUMONGOUS 12 V Champion 8D
battery (made by Exide? Interstate?). This battery is nearly as large as 3
golf cart batteries. Looks to weigh at least 125 pounds. Makes me go
"Hmmmm...". Never heard of this battery, which costs $99. It has a
"gazilloion cold-cranking amps" and "reserve amps", but I have no idea what
the amp hours are. Nothing on whether it's a deep cycle battery either, but
the battery is not very tall at 9 or 9-1/2"...a bad sign.

I would like opinions on the Lincoln genwelder and the group 8D battery.
Thanks in advance.

Lincoln is a respected name in Welders, almost as good as Miller.
8D's are a standard battery size, and can be found in Deep Cycle,
Heavy Duty, and HD Deep Cycle, classifications, depending on the
OEM Marketing Hype. I have a bunch of Interstate 8D's in HD
Deep Cycle, that serve me well in various systems.

Oh man, that's rough!
Lincoln is THE most respected name in engine driven welding machines and has
been for decades. Of course some people prefer Millers, but few if any in
critical piping or structural work.
Miller tends to make a good generator, that will also weld. Lincoln tends to
make good welders that will also generate a little electricity.
In the range you are looking at both Lincoln and Miller make good machines.
It is probably a version of the Power arc 4000? If so keep in mind it's AC
only and that will limit you somewhat . Lots of homeowner/farmer type
welders tool along perfectly happy with AC only.

JTMcC.

Hi Bruce,

Thanks a bunch for the reply.

Any idea what the approximate AH capacity is? At that price, looks like they
would be superior to golf cart batteries, depending on reliability. They
certainly are big enough to hold a LOT of electrons!

I always figured that my 8D Deep Cycle were 240amp/hr. You can call
Interstate and confirm that on their 800 phone number.
