Broken LCD display on Makita 104 Radio

I was wondering if its possible to get a replacement LCD display for a Makita DMR104 radio.
I can't see any obvious identification of the cracked LCD display - apart from some text on the plastic mount - RD+60 and 2000S900000. The only option Makita give is to replace the expensive main board with the display on.

That looks like a fairly standard 2 line bt 20 character LCD. If you could take it out and show more pictures we might be able to find a replacement.

The models with a larger display are an integrated proprietary item.
Couldn't find any with a 16x2 display to see any tear-down images.
Worth looking though as a $2.00 lcd might be adaptable as Bob says.(pics)

Image probably doesn't help - the wires are still in the pcb - which unfortunately haven't got a photo of them as not with me.
