Bought a house w/ a 1000e & can't use it :(

R

Roger Brighton

I recently bought a house with a NAPCO ALERT 1000e keyboard and matching
control. Unfortunately, I can't do anything with the alarm system. I'd
like to be able program the user code, enable the entry/exit delay, and
disable the $#@# chime. Unfortunately the original owners of the alarm
are long gone (it was an estate sale), and the alarm company they used
when the system was used is no longer around.

I've found the instructions to the system, and found that there is a
User Program Code and a Dealer Program Code. Unfortunately the default
codes in the manual do not work, so it looks like they've been changed.

Is there a way to change the dealer program code back to the default?
I'm handy with circuit boards and electronics. Eventually I'll want
to have a more modern system installed, but in the meantime I'd love to
be able to use the existing system while we recover from the house
purchase .

Thanks!

Press 5 and hold it down for 3 seconds (until it beeps). This will turn off
the chime.

Better hope someone didn't use 5 as the quick arm code, I've seen that
happen :)

Hi Allan,

I can do that (turn off the chime by holding down 5) but it turns off the chime
for all doors. I would still like the chime to ring for the back door (near the
kids rooms) but really don't want it for the front door where it rings
constantly. Also, if the alarm does go off, the alarm system goes into some
kind of fault a few minutes later, even if the alarm has been reset. Presumably
it is complaining because it can't connect to the phone line. I disconnected it
from the phone line since there is nobody to dial to (and it appears it tries to
dial only 7 digits anyway). How can I prevent it from trying to dial?

Thanks!

Rog,
The system is locked out. The things you want to change have to be done
from the dealer programing mode and you don't have the dealer code.

Your only choices are:

Find the original dealer and get the code.
Live with the system the way it is.
Turn the system off and/or throw it out, until you get a new one.
Find a local dealer that can unlock it for you. ( Some dealers know how
to do it .... some don't)
Or Jim Rojas, a participant in this newsgroup can unlock it for you for
a fee, if you are willing to send it to him.

There's always the "put your kid in front of the keypad and have him start
punching every possible combination" method!

Hehehe...right....and after replacing the keypad 10 or so times, and
spending a few years of his young life trying, he might just get it....

Combinations and purmutations......the possibilities are endless... Say, now
that might just be a good way to keep the young lad out of trouble....

No..they only use that method on Sunday night on a holiday weekend between 9pm and 3am:::

Angry Caller: You don't know me I bought a house 9 years ago with YOUR system in it, we aren't "hooked up"...no you wouldn't have my name in your database. YOUR alarm is going off, how do I turn off this damn thing.

My Response: MY alarm isn't going off, nice and quiet here. Our local service rate is...blah blah blah.

Angrier Caller: Oh I have to PAY for service? Well how do I turn this off??? All I want is to turn it off?

My Response: I dunno - WHO are you? WHERE are you?

More Angrier Caller: I have to tell you that????

Me: UH yeah...oh btw...WHY didn't you call 9 years ago when you bought the house? No I don't know what YOUR code to disarm is. I would have IF you'd called for service 9 YEARS ago!!

blah blah blah...

.....etc....

Now he's a nice bit of gasoline to add to the flames

If they did call the original installer are they obligated to unlock the
panel for free?

(quickly running for cover)

No, why run for cover, that is a valid question !!

The first definition needed however is ...what do you define as "locked" ?
If you mean simply that the installer code has been changed, why should the
previous company default the board for nothing. Doing that should only be
needed anyway if the board needs serious re-programming for another station,
account number etc. That requires a service call, and this guy is owed
nothing.

The second question is....do you mean the board is software locked so it
can't be defaulted? If so, someone did back then what they should never have
done - lock a customer owned piece of property, and they damn well should
unlock it, AND at no charge!! They did something that was clearly unethical
under the circumstances described, and they have an obligation to make
things right (even if the guy in this theoretical situation IS a
pr*ck....:))

But then, one would never know this was necessary unless one was trying to
default the board anyway, so it's a bit of a mute question.....

there ya go..startin' it again :)

no, these are my installs so I'm just talkin about new/old owners in old houses...without codes or clue....

Mark has teamed up with me in my crusade against locking boards. He's just
helping me out by throwing gasoline on the fire....:))

You see, I have a secret plot, that is brilliant in its deviousness. What I
do is bait the ng something like Wireless Willy does ! I get those marginal
types in our industry angry as hell, so much so, that they say "F*ck him,
I'm going to lock my boards just to spite this self righteous old fool". So
once they do that, the flow of locked boards to me increases and I make that
much more money unlocking them...

Brilliant eh ! Keep up the good work guys...I can use all that extra
cash.....:))))

Yeah, me too.

Here's one for ya.

Customer is away on vacation.
House sitter has sevice code. ( only works when system is armed with
service code)
She accidently "quick arms" (push on/off button) the system.
Now she can't disarm it with the service code.
From that point on ..............
I don't even mention the fact that the system can "quick arm" now.

R

R.H.Campbell

Yup ! It's called hitting the send button too quickly and not going over
your message first....

Excellent reverse-marketing plan...now teach me how to unlock panels and I will join the crusade ! :)
