Beginning electronics - radio transmitter / receiver

Hello folks, I'm relatively new to electronics. I would like to attempt
a specific project, but would need some pointers, I hope you guys can
guide me to where I could learn enough to achieve my goal.

I'd like to build a transmitter as well as a receiver, using radio
waves to communicate, but instead of sending a modulated signal
representing audio, I would like to simply send a specific signal for
which the receiver would react. That would translate in a transmitter
on which I can press a button to start it and the receiver which lights
up a LED when it receives the correct signal.

I know basically how a normal radio works, but I'm not much experienced
with building electronic devices.

Do you guys know about good places to learn about simple radios I could
build with standard components and about what I specifically want to
do?

If you have any suggestions, I'd like to hear them!

I believe you want pulse modulated? (Never tried it myself)

I suppose if I were trying to do what you're trying to do, I'd look for
an IC some place that did it, whatever they use in those remote control
cars.

There are many many ways to make radio transmitters.. even when you're
not trying to! :-/ (alas, when you ARE trying to.. never seems to work!)

I'd mention the frequencies you plan on using if you ask anyone about it,
the higher the frequency, the more careful you need to be about wire
lengths etc..

Some day, I'd like to get into that again. (I just finished failing another
attempt at a solid state regen radio.. after frying the FET)
