Back emf?

Hi, I have constructed the circuit shown below, I am using a 9v battery as the power supply, when the motor is running the battery gets extremely hot, how can I prevent this from happening please? Any help will be gratefully appreciated

Use a more powerful battery.
Reduce the load.

Some information on the battery type and load current would be helpful. Does it work?

The motor should have a back-emf protection power diode in parallel.

The diode should have a current rating similar to the peak current that the motor draws.
