Auto-electrics are a little specialised. General electronics knowledge will probably allow us to cover most of the basics, but almost certainly not all.

Teaching safety is an area where you don't want to make mistakes (even by omission).

I would seek out someone qualified to teach auto electronics and get them to cover this in some detail with you. You may learn very little, but at least you can be confident that what you will learn will come from someone qualified in the particular field.

I googled "jump starting a car safety" and found several references that suggest your method but contain several precautions that we have not suggested (including to beware of frozen batteries).

Thanks Steve I googled "auto electrics" and found a very informative automotive electronics tutorial.

Also, I have written on safety when jump starting a vehicle, and did mention not to jump start a frozen battery because it could explode.
(Because a charging battery forms hydrogen that would be trapped by ice in the cells)

If you could explain better why not to jump start a frozen battery, that would be great!

What I really want to do is perform an experiment, say with two small 9 volt batteries that would simulate what could happen if you made and error when jump starting a car.

How would I go about setting that up????

Sorry if I'm making you more nervous Steve, telling you what I want to do here, with my "limited" knowledge of electricity and batteries!:)

What about Ben Franklin when he held the kite string with a key under lightning!!!!????
he could have been killed!

(I think I have the advantage of a little more knowledge than him
because of science and technology we have today)

I would only be guessing -- batteries don't freeze where I come from :)

It would be difficult. Car batteries are dangerous because of the huge power they can deliver -- melting wrenches dropped across the terminal is an example.

That's not something that can be demonstrated.

If you're really looking for some dangerous activities, look up the history of anesthesia!

All of which come with their own set of dangers.
