Dear all,

Before designing one must know how a component works before designing what
they want. I would kindly like to know which books does explain a simple
circuit in DETAILS? A few books with simple circuit explanation but not in
detail especially why this and that resistors, inductors and capacitors are
used in this arrangement? And the most exciting is why this certain value is
chosen and not that. For instance, in a simple RLC snubber circuit and
inductor is used but no explanation of its existence....

Try the application notes from manufacturers data sheets. Alas there
are no simple answers leading to the overall choice of peripheral
components. This is why design Engineers are normally degree
qualified.

Basic electrical circuits books give the reader the ability to analyze and
troubleshoot circuits. Design is a bit different, because there are usually
many, many ways that a problem can be solved, so it's hard to teach design
(plus a problem that has more than one answer takes forever to grade). When
designing there are usually specifications given for voltage, current, power
consumption, cost and circuit performance (speed, bandwidth, etc..). If you
try to start with a design problem, most people get lost in the explination.
So the books are broken into small chuck that are easier to digest. For an
RLC snubber, R will limit the current, and L & C determine the cut off
frequence f ( f = 1 / (2*pi*sqrt(LC) ). The arrangement will determine
whether the filter is high pass (low frequencies are blocked), or low pass
(high frequencies are blocked). My old circuits text book doesn't get to
the analysis of RLC networks untill page 429.

"Art of Electronics" by Horowitz and Hill is the most often recommended
for this sort of thing. Winfield Hill is a regular over on
sci.electronics.design.
